American soldiers observe the Normandy coast in a LCVP landing craft heading for the Easy Red sector of Omaha Beach. This is one of the 18 LCVPs of the II/18th IR which landed at 10:30 a.m. west of Wn 65.
At 10:00 a.m., Wn 64 had just been cleared by GIs coming from the east via the cliff ridge (Spalding section). The Wn 65 was still a little active, it was the II/18 that cleaned it up, before heading east and Colleville-sur-Mer.
This photo was taken by Captain Herman Wall, commander of the 165th SC Photo Co., he disembarked at 11:30 a.m. on Easy Red from an LCVP, then a few moments later he took a series of photos of LCT between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. June 44.
Injured after taking the series of LCT photos, he will remain on the shore with the ebb tide and will only be evacuated to England around 2:30-3:00 p.m.
His 35 photos will be saved, part of a foot will be amputated.
