1st Lt. Clarence E. Coggins
1st Lt. Clarence E. Coggins in Grenoble, France, 25 August, 1944. After being captured by a German patrol, Coggins, from Poteau, Okla., convinced a German Major that escape from Allied troops was impossible. The German Major then freed Lt. Coggins to arrange terms of surrender with his superiors. Terms were accepted, and so 942 enlisted men, 17 officers, and vast amounts of equipment were turned over to Americans at Grenoble. 45th Infantry Division. Lt. Coggins was killed in January 1945.
