That’s larger than Yellowstone and Yosemite National Parks combined, and nearly half the area of Massachusetts. The latest blazes follow a string of particularly deadly and devastating fire seasons in California, and scientists say climate change will ensure even worse ones to come.
To anyone who lives here, or anyone who’s watching, the situation is maddening and seems utterly unsustainable. So what’s the solution?
There’s an overwhelming to-do list. But one of the clearest conclusions, as experts have been saying for years, is that California must begin to work with fires, not just fight them. That means reversing a century of US fire suppression policies and relying far more on deliberate, prescribed burns to clear out the vegetation that builds up into giant piles of fuel.
Such practices “don’t prevent wildfires,” says Crystal Kolden, an assistant professor at the University of California, Merced focused on fire and land management. “But it breaks up the landscape, so that when wildfires do occur, they’re much less severe, they’re much smaller, and when they occur around communities, they’re much easier to control.”…”

“…Nashville Mayor John Cooper and members of his administration weren’t straightforward enough with their COVID-19 data and, in effect, hurt local businesses and justified fears that government officials would abuse their power during this long emergency.
This, according to Beacon Center of Tennessee spokesman Mark Cunningham. Cunningham responded to a FOX 17 of Nashville report that suggested Cooper and his staff members kept secret the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases coming out of the bars and restaurants in the city’s lower Broadway area.
Beacon is a Nashville-based right-of-center think tank.
Cunningham told The Tennessee Star Thursday that, with this news, every bar in the city should open back up.
“The issue is that the data had showed very few cases from bars, and he knew that and he shut them down anyway. That’s the bombshell. He [Cooper] knew that there wasn’t an issue with the bars, yet he shut them down,” Cunningham said.
“Science only seems to follow the CDC recommendations when it fits his preconceived agenda, and he’s just had this vendetta against bars. Despite the contrary evidence, he basically has cost business owners, performers, and employees of their livelihoods with numbers that were contradictory to what he was saying publicly.”…”

“…Another on-brand topic here is the thorough awfulness of the American mainstream political media. Wanted in all fifty states for the murder of ethical journalism, the MSM is once again working overtime to help get a Democratic presidential candidate elected despite said candidate’s myriad flaws.
At the beginning of the month I wrote that I didn’t think that the media could prop up Joe Biden until the election.
I may have underestimated the hacks who pollute the MSM.
An integral part of propping up Grandpa Gropes is attacking President Trump, of course. On Tuesday night¸ President Trump subjected himself to a town hall on ABC that was hosted by former Clinton administration flack, George Stephanopoulos. My HotAir colleague Karen Townsend watched and had some observations:
I confess, I watched. Going into it, my expectations were low. I was not disappointed. The event was even worse than I thought it would be. The participants were allegedly uncommitted voters though, after listening to their questions, that description is impossible to believe. It was easy to assume that all but possibly two of the very small audience are Biden voters. The voters were identified by name and for whom they voted in 2016 if they voted at all.
The question that kept popping up for me was whether or not the people had been coached by ABC staffers before the town hall began. I say that because the overt hostility and aggressive line of questioning were unusual, even for Trump opponents. This is 2020, though, and clearly any form of civil behavior is to be set aside if political points can be made, especially against the president. For example, I have never seen a person stand up and ask a question of any president at a town hall and while doing so, rudely not allow him to respond until she permitted it. Ellesia Blaque, an assistant professor from Philadelphia with preexisting conditions, asked a question about Obamacare. As she did so, Trump began to respond but she shut him down. “Please stop and let me finish my question, sir,” she said. She voted for Hillary in 2016.
My mom called me as soon as it was over to go on about how awful Stephanopoulos was.
I felt it was important to pass along my mother’s opinion. It’s Friday, we can free-form a little. Also, I’m a good son.
Last night, CNN — aka The Official Broadcast Wing of the Democratic National Committee — hosted Joe Biden for an hour-long forum. This affair was a bit more cuddly than the president’s time with ABC. Even so, Slurry Joe struggled with things like English and his own policies.

Joe Biden praised the idea of incorporating fact-checkers into the presidential debates, but those desperately needed fact-checkers were nowhere to be found at CNN’s town hall event with Biden on Thursday.
In stark contrast to President Trump’s town hall event with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos earlier this week, CNN’s Anderson Cooper and a crowd of mostly friendly supporters took turns asking the 77-year-old candidate softball questions.
Biden told all sorts of lies during the one-hour event on CNN, a fitting location for such fake news. Biden lied when he accused President Trump of not mentioning the coronavirus in his State of the Union Address.
“My administration will take all necessary steps to safeguard our citizens from this threat,” Trump said in his State of the Union Address, which Nancy Pelosi ripped up in anger.
There were a couple of Kabuki theater moments that CNN staged to try and make things seem legit. Host Anderson Cooper briefly pressed Biden on the fact that he’s been all over the place on the fracking issue, for example. Biden gave a barely-coherent answer and Cooper let it go. That’s a classic MSM ruse with Democrats. The interviewer will hit the Dem with the “hard question,” then accept virtually any answer and leave it at that…”

“…We live in strange times, when wrong is right, facts are not the truth, and questioning a narrative not based on science elicits immediate condemnation — what’s more commonly referred to as being canceled. Since the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, not only is the overused meme “rely on the science” irksome, but, apparently, relying upon science applies only in certain circumstances.
While observing the scientific method in order to prevent the spread of a microscopic virus, science doesn’t apply to the definition of biological sex. In fact, the science of biology has taken a back seat to the bizarre thinking of male and female being interchangeable. Anyone who dares to challenge the contentious transgender narrative is deemed irredeemable. Two people keenly aware of their now canceled status are the widely popular children’s book author J.K. Rowling and the greatest female tennis player in women’s sports history; Martina Navratilova. Their crime? Both women expressed contrary opinions about transgenderism…”

“…That email came about two weeks after the station’s six directors urged Klein’s removal from her station manager position over a tweet in which she shared an article about Jacob Blake, the Black man who was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and his arrest warrant for sexual assault, “Always more to the story, folks. Please read this article to get the background of Jacob Blake’s warrant. You’ll be quite disgusted.”
Klein’s tweet prompted widespread calls for her termination, resulting in Gilger giving Klein three options: “Reassignment to another student worker position,” “Remain on the board with the assignment I outlined,” or “start your own station.” Klein told Campus Reform that the “assignment” to which Gilger alluded “would be a new board position where I work on diversity and different issues.”
Roughly one hour later, Klein responded to Gilger, writing, “After long consideration about the situation, I am declining to willingly step down from my position as Station Manager. I truly believe I did nothing wrong that is worthy of removal. No one has communicated to me any law, written standard, or rule I violated with my actions. I shared a factual argument, and although I shared an opinion, that I was disgusted by the sexual assault of a woman, I have done nothing more erroneous than my peers.”
“I was told to tweet as part of my assignment at Cronkite News, and as a student, am learning how to do so to standard. The issue remains, many students at the school don’t know what that standard is. I stand by the belief I am being treated unfairly, and the school and faculty advisers have failed to protect me and my rights as a student and individual,” she added…”
“…Early this month, Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber went through the woke “anti-racist” rite of confession: he published a letter confessing the ongoing racism at his university under his leadership. Such confessions serve to prop up the ridiculous claim that any racial disparities are ipso facto proof of “institutional racism.” Claims like Eisgruber’s are less a confession of actual fact and more a rhetorical weapon to push Marxist critical race theory.
Yet the Department of Education (DOE) decided to call Princeton’s bluff. According to a letter obtained by The Washington Examiner, the DOE launched an investigation into the Ivy League university. Princeton, like other schools that receive federal funding, pledges to abide by certain federal laws in order to receive federal funding.
Since Eisgruber became president in 2013, Princeton has received more than $75 million in federal Title IV taxpayer funds and the school “has repeatedly represented and warranted to the U.S. Department of Education Princeton’s compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” the letter reads. “Title VI provides no person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color, or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
“On September 2, 2020, you admitted Princeton’s educational program is and for decades has been racist,” the letter notes. “Among other things, you said ‘[r]acism and the damage it does to people of color persist at Princeton …’ and ‘[r]acist assumptions…remain embedded in structures of the University itself.’”
“Because of racism, you announced race-based ‘diversity’ measures for hiring, procurement, teaching, fellowship, and research funding,” the letter adds.
“Based on its admitted racism, the U.S. Department of Education ic concerned Princeton’s nondiscrimination and equal opportunity assurances in its Program Participation Agreements from at least 2013 to the present may have been false,” the letter explains. “Finally, the Department is further concerned Princeton’s many nondiscrimination and equal opportunity claims to students, parents, and consumers in the market for education certificates may have been false, misleading, and actionable substantial misrepresentations in violation of” U.S. law.
Therefore, the DOE is opening an investigation into Princeton and may end up removing funds from the university — and demanding Princeton pay back taxpayer funds it should not have received. “Based on the facts, the Secretary of Education may consider measures against Princeton for false Program Participation Agreement nondiscrimination assurances, including an action to recover funds.”…”
