Rand Paul Doesn’t Buy Doctor’s Clearance Of McConnell, Not A ā€˜Valid’ Diagnosis

“…Sen. Rand PaulĀ (R-KY), a former ophthalmologist who has long been a thorn in his home state colleague’s side, took issue with Monahan’s letter and the overall rationale given for McConnell’s health episodes after the Capitol physician cited dehydration as a contributing factor.

ā€œIt’s just mildly annoying to see people saying this is dehydration when it’s obviously not,ā€ Paul told reporters outside the Senate chamber. ā€œEverybody’s seen the clips. It’s not a valid medical diagnosis for people to say that’s dehydration.ā€

He added, ā€œI don’t think it’s been particularly helpful to have the Senate doctor describing it as dehydration, which I think even non-physicians seeing that probably aren’t really accepting that explanation.ā€…”

The $53,000 Connection: The High Cost of High-Speed Internet for Everyone

“…Officials doling out billions of dollars for broadband in rural America are struggling to decide when a new hookup costs too much.

Nebraska’s Winnebago Tribe has long been stuck with sluggish internet service. The federal government plans to fix that by crisscrossing the reservation with fiber-optic cable—at an average cost of $53,000 for each household and workplace connected.

That amount exceeds the assessed value of some of the homes getting hookups, property records show. While most connections will cost far less, the expense toĀ reach some remote communities has triggered concerns over the ultimate price tag for ensuring every rural home, business, school and workplace in America has the same internet that city dwellers enjoy…”

Sciency science. Misrepresentation through exclusion: “I just got published in Nature because I stuck to a narrative I knew the editors would like. That’s not the way science should work.”

I Left Out the Full Truth to Get My Climate Change Paper Published

“…If you’ve been reading any news about wildfires this summer—from Canada to Europe to Maui—you will surely get the impression that they are mostly the result of climate change.

Here’sĀ the AP:Ā Climate change keeps making wildfires and smoke worse. Scientists call it the ā€œnew abnormal.ā€

AndĀ PBS NewsHour:Ā Wildfires driven by climate change are on the rise—Spain must do more to prepare, experts say.

AndĀ The New York Times:Ā How Climate Change Turned Lush Hawaii Into a Tinderbox.

AndĀ Bloomberg:Ā Maui Fires Show Climate Change’s Ugly Reach.

I am a climate scientist. And while climate changeĀ isĀ an important factor affecting wildfires over many parts of the world, it isn’t close to the only factor that deserves our sole focus.

So why does the press focus so intently on climate change as the root cause? Perhaps for the same reasons I just did in an academic paper about wildfires inĀ Nature, one of the world’s most prestigious journals: it fits a simple storyline that rewards the person telling it.

The paper I just publishedā€”ā€œClimate warming increases extreme daily wildfire growth risk in Californiaā€ā€”focuses exclusively on how climate change has affected extreme wildfire behavior. I knewĀ notĀ to try to quantify key aspects other than climate change in my research because it would dilute the story that prestigious journals likeĀ NatureĀ and its rival,Ā Science,Ā want to tell.

This matters because it is critically important for scientists to be published in high-profile journals; in many ways, they are the gatekeepers for career success in academia. And the editors of these journals have made it abundantly clear, both by what they publish and what they reject, that they want climate papers that support certain preapproved narratives—even when those narratives come at the expense of broader knowledge for society.

To put it bluntly, climate science has become less about understanding the complexities of the world and more about serving as a kind of Cassandra, urgently warning the public about the dangers of climate change. However understandable this instinct may be, it distorts a great deal of climate science research, misinforms the public, and most importantly, makes practical solutions more difficult to achieve…”

And by that I mean middle-class America,ā€ said Mr. Beatty, who is now a registered Independent…

…Mr. Beatty said it is insulting for Mr. Biden and the Democrats to keep saying how great the economy is. ā€œMaybe for his friends. It is about the rich getting richer and putting us working class people against each other instead of looking at the real problem. The real problem is the rich people against poor people. It’s more classism than racism,ā€ he said.

Mr. Beatty, who has earned multiple degrees and certificates in the trades, criminal justice and leadership, said the media tries to divide people on the basis of skin color…”
