Masking Up Is a Political Statement, Not Disease Prevention

“…Mask mandates are making a comeback in America and most of us are very unhappy about it. We should be. Even with the highly infectious Delta variant of the coronavirus, masks simply aren’t necessary.

The best mitigation strategy against the pandemic has always been vaccines. Before vaccines became widely available, masking up, social distancing, and other disease prevention strategies made sense for some people.

But now that 160 million Americans have been fully vaccinated and the vaccines are in every pharmacy, doctor’s office, and county health facility in the nation, forcing people to wear masks becomes nothing more than tribal signaling.

The New Censorship

History shows the dangers of suppressing scientific debate—but social media platforms, using public health as a justification, are eroding free speech.

Over the last few years, the phrase “the science is settled” has become a euphemism for “shut up.” This year, the various social media platforms have been deleting what they declare to be Covid “misinformation.” The truth, as far as Facebook, Twitter, and others are concerned, is now whatever the government’s line is at the moment. Disgracefully, the Biden administration has been encouraging social media platforms to increase this censorship.

If the Centers for Disease Control has made a pronouncement regarding the pandemic, not even a highly credentialed epidemiologist is allowed to disagree, at least until the CDC changes its mind. Last year, to suggest that Covid-19 originated in a Wuhan virology lab was “misinformation.” Today, it is the leading theory…”
