L.A. district attorney drops death penalty for man charged with killing police officer

“…Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascón said he would not seek the death penalty for Michael Christopher Mejia, 30, charged with killing a police officer and his own cousin in 2017.

Officer Keith Boyer, 53, was killed when he responded to a report of a traffic collision in which Mejia was involved. Mejia also shot officer Patrick Hazell while trying to flee the scene of the crash. Hazell survived.

Deputy District Attorneys Garrett Dameron and Geoff Lewin both objected to removing the death penalty from the case.

“[D]espite our attempts to prevent this from happening, we’ve been ordered to remove the death penalty as punishment consideration in this case,” Dameron said.

Gascón, who was sworn into office two months ago, pledged he would no longer pursue the death penalty, adding that he had a “mandate from the public.”

Boyer’s stepfather, Don Clark, said removing the death penalty is “a punch to the gut.”

“People don’t realize how hard it is on the families,” Clark said. “What Gascón’s doing — not only to our family, but to the cousin’s family — but to so many other families … that’s absolutely horrendous.”…”

Washington’s birthday

Gilbert Stuart Williamstown Portrait of George Washington.jpg

From George Washington to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island, 18 August 1790

Gentlemen.

While I receive, with much satisfaction, your Address1 replete with expressions of affection and esteem; I rejoice in the opportunity of assuring you, that I shall always retain a grateful remembrance of the cordial welcome I experienced in my visit to Newport,2 from all classes of Citizens.

The reflection on the days of difficulty and danger which are past is rendered the more sweet, from a consciousness that they are succeeded by days of uncommon prosperity and security. If we have wisdom to make the best use of the advantages with which we are now favored, we cannot fail, under the just administration of a good Government, to become a great and a happy people.

The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.

It would be inconsistent with the frankness of my character not to avow that I am pleased with your favorable opinion of my Administration, and fervent wishes for my felicity. May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy.

Go: Washington

Washington was a great man and a great American. In this short letter, he illustrates one of the founding tenets of America, freedom to worship as you please.

Attorney General nominee Merrick Garland to say US does ‘not yet have equal justice’

I think this kind of nonsense talk is a disservice to the country and to the people he thinks he is helping.

The only lack of equal justice occurs when Democrats are not held to the same standards as Republicans.

Columbia professor: I do heroin regularly for ‘work-life balance’

“…Carl Hart is a Columbia University professor of psychology and neuroscience. He chairs the psych department and has a fondness for heroin – not only as a subject of scholarly pursuit but also as a substance for personal use.

At 54, the married father of three has snorted small amounts of heroin for as many as 10 days in a row and enjoyed it mightily – even if, as he recalls in his new book “Drug Use for Grown-ups: Chasing Liberty in the Land of Fear” (Penguin Press), he’s experienced mild withdrawal symptoms “12 to 16 hours after the last dose.”

But, as Hart sees it, the discomfort is a worthwhile trade-off.

“There aren’t many things in life that I enjoy more than a few lines by the fireplace at the end of the day,” he writes, pointing out that the experience leaves him “refreshed” and “prepared to face another day.”…”
