New Jersey Officials Remove September 11 Flags from Highway

“…Just a few days ahead of the 19th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has decided to remove American flags from highway overpasses. The flags had been displayed on the overpasses ever since hijackers flew into the Twin Towers and killed nearly 3,000 people.

The Turnpike Authority wrote the following explanation on Facebook:

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority appreciates and applauds patriotism. We try to express patriotism ourselves every day by maintaining dozens of American flags at properties in our right of way — office buildings, toll plazas, service areas, maintenance facilities, State Police buildings, warehouses. Those flags are treated with the utmost respect by Turnpike Authority personnel. They are flown on suitable staffs. They are illuminated at night. They are lowered to half-staff when the state is in mourning. They are removed, properly destroyed, and promptly replaced when they become faded or worn and are no longer suitable symbols of our national ideals.

The long-standing policy of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority has been to prohibit the display of any flags, signs, or banners by private parties on Turnpike Authority property. While we appreciate the desire of some New Jersey residents to express their patriotism in these turbulent times by displaying flags on Turnpike and Parkway overpasses, Turnpike Authority regulations do not allow it, and for good reason. The Turnpike and Parkway run through more than 100 municipalities and include more than 1,100 bridges and other structures. The NJTA cannot adequately monitor flags mounted by private citizens to make sure they are safely and securely hung, properly displayed, and respectfully maintained. While we hope that everyone who wants to display the American flag finds a suitable location to do so, we believe that limiting the flags displayed on Turnpike Authority property to ones hung and maintained by Turnpike Authority staff is the best way to assure that all flags in the Turnpike and Parkway right of way are treated with the respect they deserve.

The move made folks livid. One Facebook user called the NJTPA “spineless cowards.”

“As a PROUD AMERICAN I am extremely DISGUSTED with the choice you made to act on the removal of our American flag that WE THE PEOPLE PROUDLY display and take care of,” wrote another user. “You are giving the American ppl a lame lying excuse for the removal of the American flag which is a positive Symbol of patriotism this Country has displayed for the past 19 years on the bridges.”…”

Northwestern law faculty refuse to explain why they introduced themselves as racists

“…Northwestern University law school faculty called themselves racists as they introduced themselves in an online townhall recently, according to a screenshot of the event.

The screenshot was obtained by conservative writer Rod Dreher, who noted in his tweet the meeting took place August 28.

“Everybody began w/ a ritual denunciation of themselves as racist. Reader: ‘Prof. Speta is not a racist. He is a wonderful man universally loved by students. It makes me sad that he is forced to say otherwise,’” Dreher tweeted.

The College Fix has reached out to professors named in the screenshot, the law school dean, and Northwestern’s media relations offices, numerous times via email over the last week.

No one is talking…”

University of Michigan-Dearborn apologizes for segregated online “cafes”

“…The University of Michigan-Dearborn issued an apology Wednesday for creating segregated online student “cafes,” one for White people and another for people of color, that it says were intended to promote discussions about race and diversity. A statement by the university near Detroit came after two virtual “cafe” events were held Tuesday, with one advertised as a “non-POC Cafe” for non-people of color to “gather and discuss their experience as students on campus and as non-POC in the world.”

The other, dubbed “BIOPIC Cafe” was for Black, Indigenous and People of Color, and described as a space for “marginalized racial/ethnic/cultural communities to gather and to relate with one another to discuss their experience as students on campus” and in the world.

Abed Ayoub, legal and policy director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, said he understood the intention but “it could have been done better, obviously.”…”
